Varieties of pepper |
varieties come from India: paynur one, karimunda, guajarina, lampong, bangka,belontoeng and cers. During last decades many genetic improvements have been performed, which make easy to develop high yield varieties, and resistant to diseases like kudarivally and belantung from Sumatra, and balamkota, kuching and Singapore.
The pamyur pepper improved variety, provides those desirable characteristics: resistant to diseases, tolerant to high humidity retention soils or regions with high rain precipitations. On the contrary, the guajarina variety is cultivated with satisfactory results in well-drained soils and regions with defined dry periods.
There are more than 40 pepper varieties worldwide; Ecuador has three:
• Kubeba: Has short racemes and small leaves. • Lampong (Kawub): It has med racemes and thick berries. When ripened their color vary from dark green to green-yellowed, or red. • Belonto, eng. Cers: It has long racemes and small berries, and is the most yielding one.
